CORPUS CHRISTI ? Paty Manzur battled from a set down to win 5-7 6-4 6-3 at number four singles for the decisive point in a 4-3 Sam Houston State victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Southland Conference women's tennis dual match at Corpus Christi Raquet Club Sunday afternoon.
Irina Sotnikova, Giorgia Pozzan and Peta Taylor won at one, two and three singles, respectively for the Bearkats other four points.
The victory ups Sam Houston to 9-6 for the season and 4-3 in Southland Conference play.
Sotknikova defeated Mirna Cicak 7-5 7-5, Pozzan blitzed Nadia Filmater 6-1 6-1 and Taylor downed Nina Ciric 6-2 6-4.
Sotnkiova and Taylor combined for an 8-1 win at the number one doubles but the Kats lost at number two,and three to drop the doubles point.
The victory gave Sam Houston a sweep on its weekend road trip after a 4-3 win at Texas-San Antonio Saturday.
“In many ways, this was a tougher match than Saturday's at UTSA,” SHSU head coach Jim Giachino said. “It was typical Corpus Christi day with lots of wind and they certainly know how to take advantage of the conditions. Paty deserves a lot of credit for fighting back for her victory.”
Sam Houston plays two home Southland Conference matches this weekend, playing host to Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and Central Arkansas on Friday at 3 p.m.
