Junior pitcher and designated player Morgan Mikulin and sophomore shortstop Hailey Wiginton were voted to the 11-player All-Tournament squad at the 2009 Southland Conference post-season tournament hosted by McNeese State in Lake Charles May 7-9.
The player helped lead No. 6 seeded Sam Houston State to victories over No. 3 Texas-San Antonio and No. 4 Stephen F. Austin to earn the Bearkats a berth in the tournament semifinals. No. 2 McNeese State edged Sam Houston 3-2 on the final day of the tournament to eliminate the Kats.
"Morgan and Hailey just had great performances," SHSU head coach Bob Brock said. "We've had a lot of ups and downs this season and it was exciting to see the way the team responded to the challenge of the tournament."
Mikulin was the starting pitcher in three of the four Bearkat games at the tournament. The Huntsville native posted a 0.70 earned run average and earned the wins in both Sam Houston victories. In 20 innings pitched, Mikulin allowed only 13 hits and struck out 13 batters.
At the plate, Mikulin hit .300 including a two-run home run for the game-winning hit in the victory that eliminated SFA from the tournament.
Wiginton led the Bearkats at the plate in the Southland event, hitting .455 including two doubles, a triple and two RBIs. She also helped keep Sam Houston alive with several outstanding fielding plays at shortstop.
