NACOGDOCHES ? Sam Houston State begins competition Friday in the 46th annual Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field championships to be hosted by Stephen F. Austin.
Multi-events will be held Friday and Saturday with the running preliminaries Saturday evening and the finals Sunday.
Sam Houston State appears to be strong on the women's side where the Bearkats are hoping for a top four conference finish.
Devin Mitchell owns the top mark in the Southland Conference in the 800 meters with a 2:11.94 clocking. Tiana Lee is the only SLC runner to go under a minute this year in the 400 meter hurdles with her 59.37 mark.
Other Bearkat women who rank among the top three competitors in individual events going into the Southland Conference meet include Dess Meek in the high jump (5' 8.75”), Kristi Hermes in the pole vault (11' 7.75”), Jessica Fisher in the 200 meters (24.20) and 400 meters (55.99), Monica May in the 400 meters (56.22) and Ty Spiller in the 100 meter hurdles (14.16).
On the men's side, Lane Dennis holds the league's top mark in the 400 hurdles with a 51.54 and Michael Courtney (46.55) and Darryl Hayes (46.67) are top three in the 400 meter dash.
In the field events, Chris Cralle holds the Southland's best mark in the hammer (215' 0”) while Chris Gilchrist (25' 2”) and C. J. Patterson (24' 5.5” ) look to do well in the long jump.
