Soccer shuts out Navarro 4-0

Four freshman scored goals as the Sam Houston State women's soccer team debuted its 2009 youth movement with a 4-0 victory over Navarro College of Corsicana in a preseason exhibition match Sunday evening at Pritchett Field.
Klein Collins product Haley Rohlmeier opened the scoring two minutes into the contest, heading in a cross from Kirby Zak.
Lindsey Posner knocked in the second goal in the 26th minute from just inside the penalty box.
Kayla Anderson of Katy Cinco Ranch scored on a cornerkick play at 54:57 and Leah Snelson of Dallas Bishop Lynch tallied the final goal at 59:00 from six yards out on a feed by senior Allison Oakland.
"Overall, it was a good effort for the first time out," Sam Houston head coach Tom Brown said. "We had eight newcomers - seven freshmen and one junior college transfer - in our starting 11. With the new players, we are so much faster and attack oriented this year. We got a look at a lot of players tonight and saw some things we will need to work on before the regular season opener next week at Oklahoma."
The Bearkats dominated play, firing 38 shots to Navarro's eight. Sam Houston forced eight cornerkicks while the visitors took only two.
"We saw some good combinations with our starting group," Brown said. "Normally, we don't substitute like we did tonight, but we wanted to get a look at everyone. The girls have been working hard and it was good to see them play against another team."
Sam Houston forced Navarro's goalkeeper to make 11 saves and had four other close range shots blocked by defenders. Starting Bearkat goalkeeper Jenny Pence was credited with three saves and backup Michelle McCullough picked up three more as the pair combined for the shutout.
"We passed really well today," Snelson said. "Our two-a-day drills have really helped out. Our confidence is up right now."
Defender Nicole Watkins, one of the three returning players in the starting lineup, was pleased with how the team played as a unit.
"It went really well," Watkins said. "We connected with each other and made some good passes. We didn't do a lot of that last year. We're further along than where we were last season."
Sam Houston will open the women's soccer season with a 7 p.m. contest at Norman, OK, next Sunday against the Oklahoma Sooners.
