PRAIRIE VIEW - Freshman Shelby Grissett posted the 15th hat trick in the seven-year history of the Sam Houston State women's soccer program as the Bearkats posted their first victory of the 2009 season with a 6-0 road non-conference victory at Prairie View A&M Sunday.
Grissett scored in the sixth, 14th and 25th minutes. Freshman also accounted for the other three goals as Haley Rohlmeier scored twice and Leah Snelson tallied once and assisted on two other scores.
"We wanted to come out and put pressure on Prairie View offensively and we did," Sam Houston head coach Tom Brown said. "We lost some intensity in the second half but it was good to have the young players put balls in the back of the net."
Grissett opened the scoring with a shot from eight yards out on a pass from Snelson. Junior midfielder Adriana Vasquez set up Grissett's second goal six minutes later with a long pass from the midfield line.
Snelson scored from point blank range on a ball that Kirby Zak headed down inside the six-yard box. Paige Rodriguez's pass set up Grissett's third goal.
Rohlmeier's tallies came on passes from Zak and Snelson.
Sam Houston dominated offensively with 29 shots to four for Prairie View. Starting goalkeeper Jenny Pence did not face a shot in the first half. Michele McCullough played in goal in the second half and was credite with three saves.
The Bearkats play three more road matches before opening their home schedule Thursday, Sept. 24, with Texas Southern. Sam Houston travels to Houston Baptist Sunday, Sept. 6, and to the Texas-El Paso tournament on Friday, Sept. 11 and Sunday Sept. 13.
