A day before the Sam Houston State football team reports for fall camp, the Bearkats have announced the arrival of transfer quarterback Blake Joseph to the 2009 squad.
Joseph (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) joins the team after spending four years at the University of Houston, where he made five starts for the Cougars.
“He is athletic with a big arm,” head football coach Todd Whitten said. “He has some Division 1 starts under his belt. I think he is somewhat of a proven commodity.”
For his career at Houston, Joseph completed 120-of-184 passes for 1,581 yards and had 10 touchdowns. His best season under center was 2007 when he made five starts, passing for 1,324 yards and nine touchdowns. His best game that season was a 318-yard effort against Rice where he threw for three touchdowns.
Joseph is a 2005 graduate of Bryan High School where he was First-Team All-District as a senior as well as a First-Team All-Brazos Valley.
Joseph will have one year of eligibility left. He will compete with Bryan Randolph for the starting job. Randolph was the backup to Rhett Bomar last season. In limited action he passed just nine times, with three completions for 17 yards.
In the 2009 Orange-White game, Randolph set a Sam Houston spring game record, throwing for 418 yards and three touchdowns. The previous best was 289 yards by Chad Schramek in the 1996 spring game. Randolph hit receiver Darrell Armstead for a 75-yard touchdown on the second play of the contest as the White defeated the Orange 54-35.
“We have some good quarterbacks on campus right now and all of those guys are going to get their chance here in fall camp,” Whitten said.
The Bearkats will report to camp Wednesday evening and take the practice field Thursday afternoon. It will be the first of 18 practices for the Bearkats during fall camp. They will open the season Sept. 3 at home against Western Illinois. That game will be an SLCTV telecast and can be seen in Houston on KTBU, Channel 55 The Tube.
