EL PASO -- With goals in the seventh, 57th and 87th minutes, the University of Texas at El Paso defeated Sam Houston State 3-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match Friday night at Miner Soccer Field.
Tameka Sumter scored in the seventh minute of the game on a pass from Skye Schutz to put UTEP up 1-0. Anoop Josan tallied on a cross from Neressa Taylor in the 57th minute. Tess Hall knocked in another goal with three minutes left to play off a feed from Madison Vadri.
The Miners put pressure on the Bearkat defense from the opening whistle, taking five shots in the first six minutes before their first goal. UTEP was credited with 30 shots. Sam Houston goalkeeper Jenny Pence made 14 saves.
The Bearkats totaled four shots, two by Amanda Biega.
Sam Houston dropped to 1-4 with the loss. The Bearkats will play Arkansas State in the second match of the UTEP Soccer Border Classic Sunday afternoon.
The Miners upped their 2009 season record to 4-2 with the victory.
