Soccer hosts Texas Southern in home opener

After five matches on the road to begin the 2009 schedule, the Sam Houston State women's soccer team finally as home match as the Bearkats play host to Texas Southern University Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Pritchett Field.
Starting as many as seven freshmen in most of their matches so far, the Bearkats have compiled a 1-3-1 record against talented competition in their opening matches.
"We knew the opening road swing the first few weeks of the season would be a challenge, but we continue to see improvement," SHSU head coach Tom Brown said. "The most important thing is that the players learn the system and what it takes to be successful when we get into Southland Conference play in October."
Sam Houston's lone victory was a 6-0 victory at Prairie View A&M. Sunday, the Bearkats tied Arkansas State 1-1.
The losses have come to strong teams at Oklahoma, North Texas and Texas-El Paso.
"During our pre-conference matches, we have tried to put the players in situations we can use to teach them about what it takes to get to the next level," Brown said. "They need to learn how to make tactical adjustments game to game as they play within their role in our system."
Sam Houston State rolled up a 9-7 record last year, the first winning season in the six-year history of the program.
Following the Texas Southern game, the Bearkats take on another tough challenge as they head to College Stadium Sunday for a 3 p.m. match at Texas A&M.
