The Sam Houston volleyball team looks to get back on the winning track this week with a pair of matches against Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents before resuming Southland Conference action Saturday.
The Bearkats travel to face Prairie View A&M Tuesday, then play host to Texas Southern on Thursday at Johnson Coliseum.
Sam Houston defeated Lamar Friday 25-17 26-24 25-22 in its opening Southland encounter. But the Bearkats dropped a five-setter to North Texas and a three-set match to Central Michigan Saturday. One of the bright spots in those two matches was the play of freshman middle blocker Becky Swann as she totaled 14 kills in the two matches.
"We're looking for some of the younger players to step forward," Gray said. "The Lamar win was a big one for us. They won the Southland Conference post-season tournament last year and represented our league in the NCAA tournament. But we've got to keep working hard to get better to compete this year."
Sophomore Carli Kolbe and senior Anna Ferguson continue to provide much of the offense for Sam Houston this season.
Kolbi has totaled 213 kills and Ferguson 166 in 15 matches so far this season. Both earned All-Tournament honors this past weekend in the Comfort Suites Bearkat Classic.
Tickets for Thursday's 7 p.m. match with Texas Southern at Johnson Coliseum are $5 for adults and $3 for youth (6-12). For more information about volleyball tickets call the Sam Houston State ticket office at (936) 294-1729.
