After Sam Houston State shut out the No. 1 scoring team in NCAA Division I women's soccer last Friday, the Bearkats again took two of the three weekly honors for Southland Conference soccer "Players of the Week."
Jenny Pence, junior from Kingwood, was named Southland "Goalkeeper of the Week" while freshman defender Hillary Ackerman received the league's "Defneisve Player of the Week" honor. The awards came after a 0-0 tie in double overtime with Louisiana Tech. The Techsters came into the match undefeated and untied in 10 matches and were averaging 4.7 goals per contest.
Pence made seven saves and faced 20 shots to earn the shutout, her third of the year. The honor marked the fifth time in Pence's career at Sam Houston and the second time in as many weeks she has been named Southland "Goalkeeper of the Week."
Ackerman played on the back line all 110 minutes in the double-overtime contest and played a major role in holding Louisiana Tech's Rachel King, who came into the game ranked No. 2 in scoring nationally, to only two shots.
Sam Houston State opens Southland Conference play Friday with a 7 p.m. match in Lake Charles, LA, against McNeese State. The Bearkats face Lamar at 2 p.m. Sunday in Beaumont. Next home match for the Kat soccer team is Friday, Oct. 9 when Sam Houston hosts Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m.
