
Western Michigan edges Kats 74-73 at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI - David Kool hit a runner down the lane with four seconds left for the winning points as Western Michigan edged Sam Houston State 74-73 in the Bearkats' final non-conference game at WMU University Arena Sunday afternoon.
Kool, a 6-3 guard, went 12-of-17 from the field to score 31 points for the Broncs. Senior guard Corey Allmond led Sam Houston with 22 points.
The Bearkats led by 12 points at halftime, 47-35, and went up by 15, 58-43, after a dunk by Clavell with 14:04 to play. But the Broncs outscored Sam Houston 18-8 in the final nine minutes to run their season record to 7-5.
The loss, the second in a row for Sam Houston, dropped the Bearkats to 8-5. Gilberto Clavell added 18 points for SHSU. Josten Crow scored nine and Drae Murray, Preston Brown and Lance Pevehouse each scored six point.
Clavell hit two free throws with 25 seconds left to give the Bearkats a 73-72 lead. But Kool took the ball up the lane for the winning points in the final seconds. Kool also produced a pair of three point plays with field goals and a free throw to give WMU leads of 69-68 at the 2:03 mark and 72-70 with 1:40 to play.
Sam Houston shot 45 percent from the field, going 30-for-66. The Bearkats were 9-of-23 from three point range and outscored the Broncs 40 to 30 in the paint.
Western Michigan was 28-of-56 for 50 percent shooting for the day.
Sam Houston scored 14 points off of turnovers, forcing WMU into 15 miscues. The Bearkats committed only seven turnovers.
The Bearkats will open the 2010 Southland Conference schedule Saturday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. when they play host to Stephen F. Austin, the defending league champions. The contest will be featured as a regional telecast on the Southland TV network.
