
Jeff Conway named to Sam Houston football staff

Jeff Conway, previously associate head coach and wide receivers coach at Central Missouri University, is the first assistant named to the staff for new Sam Houston head football coach Willie Fritz.
Conway served six years on Fritz's staff at Central Missouri as the Mules rolled up a 41-24 record including an 8-3 mark last year.
Previously, he worked six seasons with the University of New Mexico. From 1993 to 1996, Conway was Fritz' s offensive offensive coordinator at Blinn Junior College for teams that rolled up a 39-5-1 record and won two national NJCAA championships
Sam Houston also announced Thursday that the Bearkats will retain Scott Stoker as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach and Ben Beasley as safeties coach. The remainder of the football coaching staff will be announced in the near future.
Fritz was named as Sam Houston State's 14th head football coach on Dec. 18. Fritz was 97-77 in 13 years at Central Missouri and has produced an overall record of 220 victories and 66 losses in a 28-year career as both a head coach and an assistant.
Conway's coaching career began as an assistant his alma mater, Northwestern Missouri State. In 1984 and 1985 he was a graduate assistant along with Fritz at Sam Houston State on teams that went 16-6 and won a Gulf Star Conference championship. Conway also served as an offensive coordinator at Missouri Western and as an assistant at Lamar.
At New Mexico from 1997 to 2003, Conway served as coordinator of special teams and recruiting and also coached wide receivers, tight ends and running backs.
Conway is a 1981 graduate of Northwest Missouri State where he earned is bachelor's degree in finance and played football as a free safety from 1978 to 1981.
Conway is a native of Knoxville, Iowa. He and his wife, Jolene, have three daughters - Callie, Patsy and Bobbi.
