Huntville - In a tight defensive match in which both teams combined for only 12 shots, Kirby Zak and Natalie Johnson both put shots in the back of the net as Sam Houston defeated Lamar 2-0 in a Southland Conference women's soccer victory Sunday afternoon at Pritchett Field.
The game winner by Zak came 18:21 into the contest on a penalty kick. Cardinal defender Jennifer Torry was called for a high kick in the penalty area. Zak right-footed her shot into the lower left hand side of the goal. The score was her fourth goal this season and her second of the weekend.
Zak scored one of the two goals in Sam Houston's 2-1 victory over McNeese State Friday night. The two scores this weekend move the sophomore's two-year total to 13 goals, making her already the sixth all-time leading scorer in Sam Houston soccer history.
With 15 minutes remaining in the contest, Amanda Biega centered a ball to Tricia Mallory. The freshman found Natalie Johnson open at the edge of the six-yard box. Johnson fired a shot past the goalkeeper for her second tally of the season.
Sam Houston defenders Nichole Watkins, Gayle Ziegler and Carly Rheman kept the Lamar offense off balance most of the day. Goalkeeper Jenny Pence picked up her fifth shutout of the 2010 season, making five saves. Lamar took seven shots during the 90 minutes of action while Sam Houston had eight.
"We continue to improve defensively," Sam Houston head coach Tom Brown said. "These were two nice victories this weekend. We've worked a lot in practice on pressuring the forwards. We just have to continue to work hard on getting better."
The shutout added another figure to the senior goalkeeper's Sam Houston school record for shutouts. Pence has blanked opponents 22 times now in her four seasons as a Bearkat.
The victory lifts Sam Houston to 3-1 in Southland Conference play. The Bearkats and Lamar both came into Sunday's action tied for third place in the league. Sam Houston evened its season record at 7-7-1. The Cardinals dropped to 2-2 in Southland play and 4-8-1 for the year.
Next week, Sam Houston will take its final regular season road trip of the year as the Bearkats travel to Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond for a Friday night match and Nicholls in Thibodaux for a Sunday afternoon contest.
The next home match for the Bearkats soccer team will be against Stephen F. Austin on Friday, October 22 at Pritchett Field.
