Southland tabs Hawkins for volleyball honor

Hawkins equaled her 2010 season high with 33 digs in the 20-25 25-18 25-20 19-25 15-11 thriller. She also totaled 33 digs in the Bearkats' five-set win over SFA October 6.
Hawkins, a sophomore from Dickinson, Texas, ranks seventh in the Southland Conference in digs this year with a 3.96 per set average. She has posted 333 digs this season and owns a 855 total for her career.
Hawkins earned first team All-Southland Conference libero as a true freshman in 2009. The honor this week marks the third time in her career that she has earned league player of the week honors.
The Sam Houston volleyball team will continue a four-match road swing through the Southland Conference this week as the Kats travel to play Stephen F. Austin Wednesday in Nacogdoches and Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond on Saturday.
Next home match for the Bearkats is Thursday, October 28, when Sam Houston plays host to Texas State at 7 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum.
Two special events will be taking place at Johnson that evening. The match is "Kats For The Cause" night at SHSU volleyball with several promotions underway to benefit breast cancer awareness.
Thursday October 28 also is "99 cent menu item" night at Johnson Coliseum with all menu items at the Johnson Coliseum concession stand priced at 99 cents each for volleyball.
