To earn the honor, a soccer team must produce an overall squad grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Sam Houston State is one of five Southland Conference teams to earn the honor. UTSA also was recognized. The Bearkats squad produced a 3.17 overall grade point average in 2009.

In both 2008 and 2009, Sam Houston also achieved success on the field, rolling up a 29-28-3 record with back-to-back trips to the Southland Conference post-season tournament the past two years.
This past two years the Bearkats also have produced their first two winning records in Southland Conference, going 5-4 in league play to finish in fourth place in 2009 and fifth place this year.
