Lubbock, Tex. - Less than 24 hours after scoring 34 points in a victory over American University, Sam Houston sophomore forward Britni Martin posted 37 points to lead the Bearkat women to a 76-70 win over Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon at United Spirit Arena.
The action came on the second day of the World Vision Classic hosted by Texas Tech.
The victory ups Sam Houston to 5-1 for the season, the best start by a Bearkat women's basketball team since 1993-94. Martin's 37 points ranks as the second highest single-game scoring total by an SHSU women. Sirena Autman set the school record again Grambling with 38 points in 1989.
Martin hit almost everything she put up, going 14-of-19 from the field including four three-point baskets.
Jaleesa Thomas added 11 points and Chanice Smith scored nine. The Sam Houston bench accounted for 17 points and the Bearkats totaled 17 points from turnovers.
"We fought hard throughout the game," Sam Houston head coach Brenda Nichols said. "I'm very proud of the way our young players are coming together as a team. Britni Martin has put two great scoring games back-to-back."
Charleston Southern (3-3) led briefly during the first half, going 18-15 at the 12:40 mark. CSU's last lead was a 25-24 margin at 7:39. The Bearkats ended the period with a 19-5 run to go up 43-30 at intermission.
Never allowing Charleston Southern closer than four points early in the second half, the Bearkats eventually built a 16-point lead, 62-46 won a lay-up by LaTisha Morgan with 10 minutes to play.
Sam Houston will complete play in the World Vision Classic Sunday at 2 p.m. with a contest against host Texas Tech. The Red Raiders bring a perfect 7-0 record into the game.
Following the World Vision Classic in Lubbock, the Kats meet Oklahoma in Norman on Wednesday, Dec. 1. The next home game for Sam Houston will be Monday, Dec. 6, when the Kats play host to Grambling at 6:30 p.m.
