Gilberto Clavell, Josten Crow named to preseason All-Southland team

Eight players who earned All-Southland Conference honors last season, including Sam Houston's Gilberto Clavell, return for the 2010-11 season and have earned a spot on the preseason all-conference teams, the league office announced Wednesday.
Joining Clavell on the preseason first team is Nicholls senior Anatoly Bose, Stephen F. Austin senior guard Eddie Williams, UTSA senior guard Devin Gibson and Texas State senior forward Cameron Johnson.
Clavell, a second-team all-conference selection and the newcomer of the year, helped lead Sam Houston to its third regular-season and second conference tournament title. A native of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Clavell was named to the USBWA All-Region team after an impressive 2010 season. He ranked fourth in the league in scoring (17.1), second in field goal percentage (.573), which also ranked 14th in the NCAA, and ranked 10th in the conference in rebounds (6.4).
Bose, a native of Sydney, Australia, is the Southland's highest returning scorer after finishing last season as the conference's No. 2 scorer with 21.1 points per game. That figure ranked 12th in the NCAA. A first-team all-conference selection, Bose tied for second in the conference with 86 three-point field goals and tied the Nicholls' single-season record. A member of the Southland Conference All-Tournament team, Bose scored a tournament-high 40 points against Sam Houston State in the tournament quarterfinals.
Williams, a native of Lawton, Okla., was instrumental in leading the Lumberjacks to the Southland tournament title game. A second-team all-conference selection a season ago, Williams led the league in minutes played (1,122), swiped 58 steals to rank second, and tied for second in steals per game (1.9). He tied for fourth in the league in 3-point field goal percentage (.409), ranked ninth in field-goal percentage (.515) and was the only player in the Southland ranked in the top 10 in both categories.
Gibson, the 2010 Southland student-athlete of the year, was one of just three league players to average more than 35 minutes a game last season (35.1). A native of Houston, Texas, Gibson earned second-team all-conference honors a year ago. He ranked second in the league in assists (4.5) and free-throw percentage (.825) He tied for second in steals (1.9) and ranked fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9).
Johnson, a third-team all-conference selection in 2009-10, was the only player in the league ranked in the top 10 in scoring, rebounds and steals. A native of Richardson, Texas, Johnson ranked eighth in scoring (14.6) and steals (1.6) and fifth in rebounds (7.9).
Members of the preseason all-conference second team include Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior forward Demond Watt, Northwestern State senior forward Will Pratt, McNeese State junior guard Patrick Richard, Islanders senior forward Justin Reynolds and Sam Houston State senior guard/forward Josten Crow.
In 2010, Crow led the Southland and ranked second in the NCAA in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.3). A native of Houston, Texas, Crow was one of seven players in the league with more than 50 steals last season (55) and ranked seventh in the league in steals per game (1.7).
Watt, a native of Chicago, Ill., was named a third-team all-conference selection in 2010. The top shooter in the conference last season, Watt led the Southland with a .658 mark from the perimeter to rank ninth in Southland history. Watt set a school single-season record with 250 rebounds last year and ranked sixth in the league in rebounds (7.8). His 39 blocks in 32 games played (1.2 average) ranked sixth.
Pratt, a third-team all-conference selection last season, averaged 13.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and shot 49 percent, while playing in 29 games. A native of Harlem, N.Y., Pratt averaged 16.3 points per game against conference opponents. His league scoring average was the highest by a Demon player since Tarius Brown in 1995.
Richard, a third-team all-conference selection, was the only sophomore on the all- conference team in 2010. A native of Carencro, La., Richard led the team in scoring (12.8), blocks (22) and steals (31). He scored in double figures a total of 23 of 30 games and ranked fourth in the league in free-throw percentage (.790).
Reynolds appeared in 31-of-32 games with 28 starts last year. A native of Pearland, Texas, he finished third on the team in scoring (9.8), had the second-most rebounds on the team (193) and currently ranks fourth all-time in school history in rebounds (555).
The 2010-11 season gets underway Nov. 12 when eight Southland teams take to the court. Conference play begins Jan. 8, 2011. The 2011 State Farm Southland Conference Basketball Tournament returns for its fourth season at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, March 9-12.
