Pence, Biega named academic all-league

Pence, senior goalkeeper from Kingwood, Texas, is a first team selection while Biega, a sophomore FW from Houston Cy-Creek was named to the second team honor squad.
A biology major and kinesiology minor, Pence has compiled an overall grade point average of 3.88 during her four years at Sam Houston.
Pence has been the Bearkats' starting goalkeeper since her freshman year, setting Sam Houston career records for goalkeeper victories (33), shutouts (23), goals against average (1.49), minutes in goal (6,571) and consecutive scoreless minutes (656).
She was captain of squads that have posted Sam Houston's highest Southland finished ever (fourth in 2009 and fifth in 2010) and qualified for the Southland post-season tournament each of the past two years.
A President's List and Dean's List student, she is receiving Academic All-Southland first team honors for the second year in a row. During her career, she also was earned ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District and NSCCAA All-South scholar athlete honors. She has been a leader of Sam Houston teams that have won three consecutive NSCCAA team academic awards.
Biega is a graphic design major with a 3.56 overall grade point average. She was the fourth-leading scorer for the 2010 Sam Houston soccer team, playing in 19 games and starting eight times this year.
Pence is one of 12 student-athletes who has received Academic All-Southland honors twice or more during her career. She also is one of 12 who hold a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
