Denton -- Sequeena Thomas scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and Britni Martin added 14 points for Sam Houston as the Bearkats fell to North Texas 75-69 in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night.
Tamara Torrun led North Texas (2-8) with 18 points. Four other Mean Green players posted double figure scoring nights.
Chanice Smith, Jaleesa Thomas and Clarke Davis all added nine points apiece for Sam Houston (6-4).
North Texas jumped out to an 8-0 lead and was up 13 points, 33-20, with 5:20 remaining in the first period. But Sam Houston roared back with a 15-4 run in the final five minutes of the period to go into the locker room at intermission down only two, 37-35.
Sequeena Thomas gave the Bearkats their only lead of the game with a lay-up to make the score 42-40 three minutes into the second half. North Texas outscored Sam Houston 22-9 in the next nine minutes to go up 12 points, 62-51, and was never threatened again.
The Mean Green outscored the Bearkats 42-22 in the paint and created 27 points from Sam Houston's 22 turnovers.
"North Texas just shot the ball better than we did," Sam Houston head coach Brenda Nichols said. "There was some positives in this loss. We rebounded well. But we didn't defend the drive at all. Now we have to learn from our mistakes and get ready for Saturday afternoon."
The Sam Houston women will play host to Houston Baptist Saturday at 1 p.m. while the men's team takes on Cleveland State at 3:30 p.m. in the only men's and women's doubleheader date of the season at Johnson Coliseum.
