Wiginton, Mikulin named preseason All-Conference

The team is selected by the league's head coaches. Sam Houston's 2010 softball season opener is Friday, Feb. 12, when the Kats open play in the University of Houston Cougar Invitational.
Wiginton, a junior from Friendswood, begins the season ranked as Bearkats' all-time leading hitter with .370 career batting average. She has earned All-Southland Conference last two seasons, garnering first team honors as a freshman and second team as sophomore. She also received All-SLC Tournament selection last year.
Wiginton led the Bearkats in 2009 with a .354 batting average. She also led the squad with 62 hits, five home runs, 22 RBI and 16 multiple hit games. Her 11-game hitting streak was the season's longest.
Mikulin, a senior from Huntsville, is a three-time All-Southland Conference honoree whose SHSU career rankings include 1st in saves (12), 4th in strike outs (309), 6th in pitching victories (45), 7th in innings pitcher (534) and 16th in hitting (.298).
Last year she earned All-Southland second team honors as a designated player. She produced 10 multiple hit games and four multi-RBI performances in that role. In the pitching circle, she went 13-10 with 2.62 earned run average and 96 strike outs.
Sam Houston State's first home softball game will be a duel with Texas A&M at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
