HOUSTON - Pitcher Morgan Mikulin posted 11th shutout and first baseman Amy Brown went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs to lead the Sam Houston State softball team to an 8-0 victory over Kansas in the Bearkats' 2010 opener.

The Kat softball team lost 8-0 to Baylor in the day's second game as Bear hurler Courtney Repka held Sam Houston to one hit and struck out six Kat batters.

In Sam Houston's victory over Kansas, Mikulin struck out four and limited the Jayhawks to four hits as she picked up the 46th victory of her Bearkat career.

Freshman second baseman Shelbi Tucker and left field Calli Wood each hit doubles for the Kats. Tucker's hit produced three runs and Wood's also chalked up a tally.

Shortstop Hailey Wigington, catcher Ashley Nelson and right fielder Lauren Burns all hit safely as well as the Bearkats totaled eight hits for the day.

Wiginton produced Sam Houston's only hit in the nightcap, leading off the fourth inning with a single to left. Baylor's Jordan Vannatta went 3-for-4 at the plate including a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lead the Bears.

In other action Friday in the Houston tournament, Louisville defeated Kansas 10-2 and Baylor 4-1.

Sam Houston continues play in the tournament Saturday with a 9 a.m. contest with Ohio State and a 3 p.m. rematch with Kansas. Tournament action will conclude Sunday at 3 p.m. when the Kats take on host University of Houston. The Bearkats face Texas A&M in their home opener at the Bearkat Softball Complex Wednesday at 4 p.m.
