HOUSTON - Sam Houston pitcher Morgan Mikulin and Houston hurler Bailey Watts both threw two-hitters but a late home run brought the Cougars a 1-0 victory as the Bearkats completed play in the Marriott Cougar Softball Classic Sunday afternoon.
The Kats ended the weekend 1-4 against the talent-laden field that included 14th ranked Ohio State and No. 15 Baylor. The tournament marked the opening of the 2010 season for Sam Houston.
The Bearkats started play Friday with an 8-0 run-rule victory over Kansas. But Sam Houston was shut out in the next four contests, falling to Baylor 8-0, Ohio State 6-0, Kansas 10-0 and Houston 1-0.
Junior shortstop Hailey Wiginton hit safely in all five games, hitting .417 for the tournament with five hits in 12 at bats.
The Bearkats had runners in scoring position five times in the Houston loss but couldn't post the run. Houston scored the game's only tally when Melissa Gregson slammed a solo home run.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Sam Houston softball team as the Kats face Texas A&M in their home opener at the Bearkat Softball Complex Wednesday at 4 p.m.
