Softball hosts Tigers in 4 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday

With Southland Conference play beginning next week with a three-game series at Stephen F. Austin, the Sam Houston softball team gets its final warm-up for league action Wednesday as the Kats play host to Texas Southern.
First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is at 4 p.m. at the Bearkat softball complex.
Sam Houston enters the contests with a 2-8 record but that mark has come against a tough schedule that has included four national top 20 teams. The Kats got back on the winning track Saturday with a 9-2 victory over Missouri State.
"There have been a lot of positive things happening with this young team," Sam Houston State head coach Bob Brock said. "A big plus for us has been the play of our junior shortstop Hailey Wiginton."
Wiginton was voted to the All-Tournament team at the University of North Texas Mean Green Classic last weekend. She has hit safely in nine of Sam Houston's 10 games, rolling up 12 hits in 30 atbats for a .400 batting average.
Senior first baseman Amy Brown also has performed well, hitting .310 with five RBIs and two home runs.
Morgan Mikulin, Tori Benavidez and Tomi Garrison have shared pitching duties with the senior Mikulin handling much of the work. Mikulin has totaled 20 strike outs working more than 35 innings. Benavidez threw a two-hitter in her last outing against Drake. Garrison saw her first time in the circle this past weekend in Denton after returning from a preseason injury.
"After the Texas Southern game Wednesday we have six days to get ready for Southland Conference," Brock said. "We start off with two of the best teams in the league, Stephen F. Austin and Texas State."
Sam Houston will travel to Nacogdoches Tuesday and Wednesday, March 2-3, to face SFA then face the Bobcats Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7 in San Marcos.
