Gilberto Clavell named All-Region

The 10-man honor squad is selected from the NCAA Division I men's basketball teams in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.
Clavell is the leading scorer and rebounder for the Sam Houston's 2010 squad that has rolled up a 24-7 record, won the Southland Conference regular season championship and is playing Saturday in the finals of the Southland post-season tournament.
The junior from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, is the only Southland Conference player on the All-Region team.
Other members of the team are Rotnei Clarke (Arkansas), Randy Culpepper (UTEP), Damion James (Texas), Tyren Johnson (Louisiana-Lafayette), Tasmin Mitchell (LSU), Bradon Reed (Arkansas State), Mike Singletary (Texas Tech), Donald Sloan (Texas A&M) and Ekpe Udoh (Baylor).
Clavell, a transfer from Collin County, is averaging16.7 points and 6.4 boards. He has scored in double fi gures in 25 of the Bearkats' 31 games including three games with 30 or more points. He has been named Southland "Newcomer of the Year"
Sam Houston State faces Stephen F. Austin in the Southland finals tomorrow in Katy at 3 p.m.
The contest tips at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
