With three weekends to go in the 2010 Southland Conference softball race, Sam Houston State sees an opportunity to gain ground on its opponents for the six berths in this year's post-season tournament as the Bearkats travel to Hammond, La., for games Saturday and Sunday.
Sam Houston (7-13 in Southland action) now stands in ninth place, two-and-a-half games behind current sixth place team McNeese State.
This weekend's opponent, however, Southeastern Louisiana (2-17) is in last place in the league rankings. All of the other teams the Kats have a chance to catch in the race for a playoff berth have high ranked opponents.
McNeese (10-11) plays third place UT-Arlington (15-7) in Arlington, fifth place UTSA (12-12) hosts league leader Texas State (16-5) and eighth place Northwestern State (8-13) hosts fourth place Nicholls (13-8). Seventh place A&M-Corpus Christi (11-13) does not play a conference series this weekend.
"We just have to focus on winning games right now," Sam Houston head coach Bob Brock said. "We can't worry about what other teams are doing. We've shown we can play with the best if we execute."
The Bearkats are 4-10 in their last 14 games but have shown promise in sweeping series with UTSA and A&M-Corpus Christi. Sam Houston has the toughest portion of its schedule behind it. The season wraps up with a pair of home series against Central Arkansas (7-13) and Nicholls.
