The Sam Houston State basketball program has announced the signing of Nafis Richardson, from McLennan Community College. Richardson (6-2, 185) was the leading scorer for McLennan last season averaging 14.4 points per game.
"Nafis will bring versatility and toughness to our program," said SHSU head basketball coach Jason Hooten. "He comes from a strong program that knows how to win. He has played for two really good coaches in junior college. The thing I like about him is he has an edge and a competitive nature about himself. He does whatever it takes on the floor."
Richardson played at Paris Junior College as a freshman. Last season he was named the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year and was also first team all-region 5 selection.
Richardson helped lead McLennan to a 27-5 record, winning the NTJCAC and finished the year ranked as the No. 24 team in NJCAA.
"He can play a couple of different positions," Hooten said. "If he needs to go get a basket ha can, but he also does a really good job of creating for others. He has a really good feel for the game. He is a good defender, so he will work into what we do."
Richardson played his high school ball at Hodgson Vo-Tech High School in Wilmington, Del. In 2008 he averaged 23 points a game and was named the 2008 Delaware Player of the Year. He was a first-team all-state selection and scored more than 1,500 points in his high school career.
Richardson is the second signing under first-year head coach Jason Hooten. Earlier this week Hooten signed Marcus Williams, a junior college transfer from Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz.
