Football readies for first scrimmage

The Sam Houston State Bearkats will take the field on Saturday for the first scrimmage of Spring Practice. Head coach Willie Fritz said he will put his players through about 70 plays beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Rain during the week forced a few changes to the practice schedule. They were forced off the field on Wednesday and then moved Friday's practice up a day.
Fritz however, said that will not really change anything for Saturday. His main focus will be seeing who has picked all the new information that has been thrown at them over the last week.
"We spent this week implementing a lot of new stuff," Fritz said. "We are going to look how quickly the guys can take what we have given them and use it out on the field."
Fritz has maintained with everyone, that no position is a given.
"All job are open," Fritz said. "We are going to get a chance to look at everyone in a game-like situation and evaluate them. Part of that evaluation will be looking at the guys who can eliminate the mental mistakes."
This will be the first of two scrimmages this spring for the Bearkats before the annual Orange-White game which will conclude spring practice on April 24. All scrimmages and the Orange-White game are free and open to the public.

The night before the game (Friday, April 23), the opportunity to coach either the Orange or the White teams will be one of the items on the block at the 22nd annual SHSU Football Dinner and Auction starting at 5:30 p.m. at the HEARTS Veterans Conference Center off state highway 75 North.
