
McCuin named 2010 indoor track MVP

Twelve student-athletes and a student manager and trainer were honored Monday night as "Most Valuable" for their sports at the annual Sam Houston State All-Sports Banquet Monday night at the Lowman Student Center.
Named as "Most Valuable" were Jenny Pence (soccer), Victoria Gemeny (women's cross country), Joey D'Eramo (men's cross country), Anna Ferguson (volleyball), Jason Madkins (football), Ambra McCuin (women's indoor track and field), Michael Courtney (men's indoor track and field), Brittany Brooks (women's basketball), Corey Allmond and Ashton Mitchell (men's basketball), Giorgia Pozzan (tennis), Shelby Hardy (women's golf), Scott Kelly and Fergal Rafferty (men's golf) and Morgan Mikulin (softball).
Kristen Drosche was named as "Most Valuable" student athletic trainer and Mike Hendren received the honor as "Most Valuable" student manager.
Baseball and men's and women's outdoor track and field will name their "Most Valuable" participants later in the spring.

Leading the soccer team to its highest Southland finish in program history, Pence earned All-Conference honors as a junior and was a two-time SLC "goalkeeper of the week" winner. With her 4.0 GPA, she was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Region, first team Academic All-Southland and was only of only four student-athletes from Texas named to the National Soccer Coaches Association Academic All-South squad. |

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRYJOEY D'ERAMO Sophomore from Houston An unselfish competitor for the Bearkats, Joey finished among the top 15 competitors in each of Sam Houston's regular season races and placed 41st at the annual Southland Cross Country meet |

Receiving the honor for the second year in a row, Anna was a first team All-Southland selection after leading the Bearkats to 20 victories, the most for the program since 1996. She was a three-time Southland "Player of the Week" winner and ranked No. 4 in the league in kills. With her 3.46 overall GPA she also was a first team selection on the 2009 Academic All-Southland honor squad |

![]() MEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MICHAEL COURTNEY Senior from El Paso Michael became the first Bearkat to earn All-America honors in NCAA Division I Indoor Track with his fourth place finish in the NCAA 400 meter dash. He finished only seven tenths of one second behind the NCAA champion. Courtney was the first Bearkat to earn a spot in national indoor finals. He won the 2010 Southland indoor 400 meter, bringing his career total of Southland championships to 10. |

![]() MEN'S BASKETBALLCOREY ALLMOND & ASHTON MITCHELL Seniors from - Oxen Hill Maryland and New Orleans, Louisiana The highest scoring backcourt in Bearkat history, Corey and Ashton guided Sam Houston to its most successful NCAA Division I men's basketball season ever. The men rolled up 25 victories, won both the Southland Conference regular season and tournament championship and took Elite Eight participant Baylor down to the wire in the NCAA first round. Both guards were first team All-Conference selections. Allmond earned national recognition by setting a Rupp Arena record for most three point baskets in a game and was ranked nationally in both scoring and shooting. Ashton led the Southland in assists for the second year in a row. Both rank among the top 20 all-time scorers at Sam Houston |
WOMEN'S TENNISGIORGIA POZZAN Sophomore from Milan, Italy Giorgia rolled up a 12-6 record playing at number one and two in dual match singles and eight victories at number one doubles leading the Bearkats to a 7-4 Southland Conference record and their fifth straight Southland post-season appearance. |

Freshman from San Saba Shelby produced a remarkable record during her first season at Sam Houston. She placed among the top 10 individuals in six of the nine tournaments in which she played; she led the Bearkats in stroke average and she tied for runner-up honors at the 2010 Southland Conference championships. |

Junior from Kingwood and senior from Northern Ireland Kelly and Rafferty led the 2010 men's golf team in stroke average and combined for eight top 10 inidividual finishes this season. Kelly won the individual medalist championship at the Sam Houston State Fall Invitational |
