Islanders defeat baseball 9-4 Friday afternoon

Corpus Christi - Despite a 3-for-3 performance at the plate by shortstop Ryan Mooney, Sam Houston State fell 9-4 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday afternoon in the second contest in a three-game road Southland baseball series for the Bearkats.

Shortstop Cory Ege went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and second baseman Bobby Buckner and first baseman Trey Hernandez each hit solo home runs to lead the Islanders.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (20-32-1, 10-21-1 Southland) totaled 15 hits. The Islanders built a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first inning and another in the second.

First baseman Mark Hudson singled, stole second then scored on back-to-back errors and Mooney hit an RBI single for Sam Houston in the fourth inning. First baseman Taylor Davis added a solo home run to right field in the top of the sixth to pull the Bearkats to within one run.

But the Islanders scored one run in the sixth and two each in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away.

Third baseman Jordan Bunch accounted for Sam Houston's fourth run with a solo homer to right center in the top of the ninth inning. Sam Houston (18-36, 10-22 Southland) totaled nine hits.

Designated hitter Chris Andreas extended his hitting streak to 25 games with a single in his third at-bat in the sixth inning. Andreas' streak is the ninth longest current streak in NCAA Division I baseball.

Brad Powers (1-6) was the losing pitcher, giving up nine hits and five runs in six innings. Justin Jackson pitched the final two innings.

Starter Trenton Irwin (1-0) was the winning pitcher, limiting the Kats to four hits in five innings.

Sam Houston and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will complete the series and end the 2010 season with their final meeting Saturday at 1 p.m.
