Brooks, Mudge named to men's basketball staff

Brooks has been an assistant at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., since 2008 and also coached at Arkansas-Fort Smith and Midland College.
Mudge has been the assistant coach at Midland Colelge the past two years, helping lead the Chaparrals to a 63-7 record and back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national top 10 rankings.
"Alvin and Chris both are young, energetic and hard-working guys who have been with winning programs," Hooten said. "They have worked under some great head coaches at such an early stage in their careers."
A native of Houston, Brooks has help direct Bradley to a 58-47 record the past three years including back-to-back 21-win seasons and a runner-up finishes in national post-season tournaments. The Braves reached the finals of the inaugural College Basketball Invitational national post-season tournament in 2008 and the first CollegeInsider.com post-season tournament in 2009. Brooks served as the Braves' recruiting coordinator.
At Arkansas-Fort Smith, he coached teams that rolled up a two-year mark of 62-7 (.899) and won the 2006 NJCAA Division I national championship. In 2007, Brooks helped direct Midland to a 29-8 (.784) record and another NJCAA Division I national title.
Brooks is the son of Alvin Brooks II who was head coach at the University of Houston from 1993-98, served on Billy Gillespie's staffs at Texas A&M and the University of Kentucky and has returned to UH as associate men's basketball coach. His father played at Sam Houston State where he was Lone Star Conference "Freshman of the Year" in 1977. He was All-Southland Conference at Lamar on two NCAA tournament teams.
Brooks III began his college playing career at Midland and helped the Chapparals to a sixth-place finish in the 2000 NJCAA national tournament before transferring to Idaho State University.
After earning Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors as a senior at Idaho State, Brooks earned his bachelor's degree in finance in 2002 and his master's degree in athletic administration from ISU in 2003.
Brooks served as an aide to former Idaho State athletic director Jim Senter for one year before beginning his coaching career at Arkansas-Fort Smith in 2004.
"Alvin is a young guy who coaches call a budding star," Hooten said. "He won national championships back-to-back years at two different places which is pretty amazing. He will bring a lot of great things to the table."
Mudge was in charge of skill development of Chaparral guards at Midland for teams that compiled a 33-4 record and reached the national championship finals in 2009 and went 30-3 and played in the regional final in 2010.
He is a graduate of Stony Point High School in Round Rock where he was the starting point guard and led his team to a top 10 ranking in the state.
Mudge earned his bachelor's degree in marketing in 2006 at the University of Texas at Austin. He served with the Longhorn basketball team as head manager, recruiting assistant, camp coordinator and assistant video coordinator.
In the summer of 2005, Mudge was named manager of the USA National Basketball Team (Dallas and Miami, Fla.) where he assisted coaches and players in drills and scrimmages during the team trials. He also assisted in training sessions to prepare for the Global Games and other international competitions.
After receiving his bachelor's degree, Mudge was elevated to graduate assistant with the Longhorns. His responsibilities included player skill workouts, assisting the video coordinator, film exchange coordinator, producing scouting and developmental edits for the team, creating a video playbook and drills notebook for the University of Texas coaching staff.
He also supervised grad assistants and undergraduate office assistants. Mudge earned his Master's in Kinesiology from the University of Texas (3.7 GPA) in May of 2008.
"Coach Mudge is what we coaches in the business call a 'grinder.' He works 24-7 and loves the game of basketball," Hooten said. "He will always turn over every rock and never leave a loose end untied."
Both Brooks and Mudge will begin work at Sam Houston State on June 1, 2010.
