Huntsville - Second baseman Adam Smith led off the sixth inning with a solo home run that proved to be the game winner for Texas A&M in a 3-1 non-conference baseball game Tuesday at Don Sanders Stadium.
Aggie starting pitcher Michael Wacha (5-2) limited the Bearkats to five hits in seven innings, striking out eight batters while walking only one to pick up the victory. John Stilson, who started at third base, picked up his seventh save of the season by giving up only one hit and striking out three in the final two innings.
An RBI single by shortstop Brodie Greene in the third inning gave the Aggies their first run.
Sam Houston cut the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth as right fielder Greg Olson led off with a single and scored on a double by second baseman Braeden Riley.
The Aggies added an insurance run in the top of the eighth as Smith doubled, then scored on a single by designated hitter Joe Patterson.
Sam Houston used six pitchers with Paul Spinn (2-6) getting the loss. Texas A&M (26-17-1) totaled 12 hits while the Bearkats (17-29) posted six.
Greene, Smith and Patterson all had three hits. Riley and shortstop Ryan Mooney led the Bearkats at the plate with two hits apiece.
A capacity crowd of 1,517 filled Don Sanders Stadium for the final non-conference game on the 2010 Bearkat baseball schedule.
Sam Houston State returns to Southland Conference action Friday as the Bearkats begin a three-game weekend series at Southeastern Louisiana. SHSU's final home Southland series will be the next weekend against Central Arkansas.
