The focus at Sam Houston preseason football camp has been changing this week.
When camp opened August 6, the mix between returning players and newcomers was almost 50-50. With so many new faces, head coach Willie Fritz and his staff felt they had to allow time for the players to learn the Bearkat system and what the coaches expected.
The coaching staff is shifting the focus as the season opener with Baylor Sept. 4 draws closer and closer.
"We've told the players that every practice is like a job interview," Fritz said. "When they step on the field, whether it's for five plays or 50, it's their chance to show us what they can do. Some of the players have taken advantage of that opportunity. Some haven't.
"Now it's time to concentrate on the guys who have shown us that, if they make a mistake, they can learn from it and get better. We're going to start concentrating on the guys who are going to play and determining our two-deep and traveling squad."
The next step in that process will be the third full-contact scrimmage of 2010 preseason camp which will take place on Friday at 9 a.m. at Bowers Stadium.
"We're going to speed the pace up Friday," Fritz said. "It's time to get better at getting on-and-off the field, getting the snaps on time. We're going to continue to expand things in the kicking game and offensively and defensively and work to correct mistakes."
In Sam Houston's first scrimmage last Thursday, the offense came out firing, totaling six touchdowns. In the second scrimmage Sunday night, the defense made its mark.
"The defense really opened up the cubbard Sunday. They ran a bunch of things gave our offense some problems," Fritz said. "But we're going to see that stuff so we have to work against it. The defense will be throwing even more stuff at the offense Friday.
Preseason camp will run to the opening day of classes August 25. The Bearkats expect to hold four full-contact scrimmages during preseason work. The third scrimmage is slated for Friday morning at 9 a.m.
Sam Houston opens the 2010 season Saturday, Sept. 4 against the Baylor Bears at Waco. The first home game will be Saturday, Sept. 25 when Gardner-Webb visits Bowers Stadium for Bearkat "Family Weekend."
The game Sept. 25 will feature a guest appearance by the Houston Texans Cheerleaders, a fireworks display and special halftime activities.
Other home games will be Oct. 16 (Homecoming) vs. Southeastern Louisiana, Nov. 6 vs. McNeese State and Nov. 20 vs. Texas State. The final three home games will kickoff at 2 p.m.
