Varsity volleyball squad downs alumni team

Returning letter winners Carli Kolbe, Kaylee Hawkins and Kelli Stewart led the SHSU varsity all with eight kills apiece. Freshman Lauren Bohlen and sophomore Camille Alfaro put down five kills each.
The alumni squad featured several top players from previous seasons including Melissa Sims, Lindsey Roebken, Chrissy Engle, Cynthia Yarotsky, Katie Phillips, Anna Ferguson, Rhae Walderman, Suzanne Wright and Karlee Butler.
The contest was highlighted by stingy defense and long rallies. Hawkins led the varsity with 25 digs, Jamie Haas and Kolbe had 15 and 13 digs respectively. Kim Black and Stewart each totaled five blocks.
Kym Loving had 20 assists dishing the the ball in the first two sets, while Courtney Laskowski and Tayler Gray led the Bearkats in the third and fourth sets.
"First off, it was great to see some familiar faces and great players of mine be back in the vintage Bearkat jerseys," head coach Brenda Gray said. "They put up a huge fight for our current team, and this was a great test for us before our home Comfort Suites Invitational tournament this Friday and Saturday.
"I was pleasantly surprised with how my team played, and they definitely showed some grit and determination, and we have continually gotten better throughout our preseason so far, which is great for this club. We look forward to playing our first match on Friday afternoon."
Play in the Comfort Suites Invitational will begin at 9 a.m. both Friday and Saturday. The Bearkats have matches scheduled Friday at 2 and 7 p.m. and on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Sam Houston is the defending Comfort Suites SHSU Invitational tournament champion.
Tickets to Bearkat volleyball at Johnson Coliseum are $5 for adults and $3 for youth. Tickets may be purchased in advance online at www.gobearkats.com or at the Sam Houston athletic ticket office located in the Ron Mafrige Field Huose at Bowers Stadium.
