South Alabama edges Bearkat soccer 3-2

Mobile, Ala. - Kristyn Thacker scored with two seconds remaining in regulation to give South Alabama a 3-2 victory in non-conference women's soccer action Friday night at USA Field.

The loss drops Sam Houston to 2-5 for the year with four of the five losses coming by only one goal.

The match started with a flurry of offense with the two teams combining for three goals in the first five minutes.

Clarissa Hernandez tallied South Alabama's first goal after only 55 seconds of play as the Jaguars strung together a series of passes down the field to set up the first shot of the match.

Sam Houston struck right back as freshman Tricia Mallory scored 2:52 into the contest. The goal was her third of the season.

Forward Brandi Smith punched in a goal at the 5:01 mark to put South Alabama back in front 2-1.

Freshman Kelsi Brown, who led the Sam Houston offense with six shots, scored her first college goal to tie the contest 2-2 at the 25:51.

The two teams battled to a stalemate for the next 64 minutes. Sam Houston sophomore Kirby Zak had scoring opportunities in the 87th and 88th minute but both attempts went high.

With the clock ticking down the final seconds, Thacker took a desperation shot from the top of the arc that curved just inside the left post for the game winner.

South Alabama upped its season record to 2-4 with the victory. The Bearkats will face Troy in Mobile on Sunday in Sam Houston's second match at the South Alabama Soccer Classic.
