Jason Russell named Southland athlete of week

Sam Houston State senior Jason Russell has been named the Co-Southland Conference men's track and field athlete of the week.
Russell, from Kerens, Texas (Kerens), won the Texas Tech Invitational men's weight throw with a distance of 58-feet, 6 inches to beat competitors from Texas State, UTSA, Texas Tech, Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M.
The award marked the second week in a row for a Sam Houston State track and field athlete to be honored by the Southland Conference.
D. J. Hayes was named Southland Track and Field Athlete-of-the-Week last week.
A student-athlete must receive 25-percent of the votes from the league's SIDs in order to qualify for honorable mention. Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
