Khamra Echols produced a season high total of 18 points to lead Sam Houston (11-10, Southland 5-2) as the Bearkat women suffered their second consecutive loss.

The Kats opened league play with a 62-53 win over the Roadrunners in Huntsville January 8 and appeared headed to another victory early in the contest. Sam Houston jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game.

But UTSA roared back with a 24-2 run to go up 26-10 on a lay-up by Kameisha Johnson with seven minutes to play in the first half.

Sam Houston cut the margin to 41-30 at intermission and pulled within four points, 54-50, on a jumper by Terrah Austin with 7:13 remaining in the game.

UTSA (9-10, Southland 5-1) out-scored the Bearkats 21-16 the rest of the way to hold on to the victory as the Roadrunners moved into first place in the Southland West Division, one half game in front of SHSU.

Sam Houston's three top scorers for the season each produced double figure scoring totals. Britni Martin posted her 17th double figure game of the season with 15 points. Sequeena Thomas scored 14 points and Chanice Smith added 11 as the pair each hit double figures for the 15th game this year.

Amber Gregg led UTSA with 15 points.

McNeese State, the league's East Division leader, visits Huntsville Wednesday, Feb. 2, in the Sam Houston women's next outing. Tipoff at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Wednesday is 7 p.m.
