In a rescheduled meeting with the Bears after the contest Sunday Oct. 8 was abandoned after 37 minutes of play because of a flooded field, Emily Jurecka, Kirby Zak and Emily Edenstrom each tallied for the Bearkats.
Jurecka's goal came on a cornerkick with 4:31 remaining in the first half. Paige Rodriguez curved a ball into the goalkeeper's box, Kaitlyn Stowe's shot was blocked by a defender and Jurecka knocked the rebound in to give the Kats a 1-0 lead at intermission.
"We're playing a couple of teams that have given up goals on cornerkicks recently, so we worked a lot on cornerkicks in practice this week," SHSU head coach Tom Brown said. "Emily was in the right position and got the ball in the back of the net."
The game's next three goals all came within a three-minute span in the second half.
Zak fired in a shot after a pass from Rodriguez for a 2-0 Sam Houston lead in the 64th minute. Edenstom took a cross from Tricia Mallory on the left side and put the Kats up 3-0 in the 65th minute.
After the kickoff, Kristin Pollard got open on a ball from Carrisa Rossi and headed in the Bears' only tally.
Sam Houston (7-9-1, 3-3) now plays host to Nicholls State Friday at 7 p.m. and Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday at 1 p.m. Central Arkansas (5-9-1, 1-5) will travel to Northwestern State on Friday.
"It's a challenge, playing three matches in five days," Brown said. "But we started the week off with win and will take some momentum into Friday's games. These matches are important for us for seeding at the post-season tournament and we need to stay focused."
