Sheridan Currie came back to win in three sets for the decisive point and Imke Jagau, Nadia Dubyanskaya and Anrinette Botah also won their singles to lead Sam Houston to a 4-3 non-conference women's tennis dual match victory Saturday afternoon at the McAdams Tennis Center.
Currie defeated Marie LeBlond 1-6 6-3 6-2 at number five singles. Dubyanskaya was in the third set at number three when UTEP's Dariya Abdrakhmanova was forced to retire due to a back injury.
Jagau and Botah both won in straight sets. Jagau defeated Carolina DeLuca 6-3 6-1 at number one and Botha knocked off Alexandra Glebova 6-4 6-4 at number four.
"This was a good win for our young team," head coach Jim Giachino said. "Still, to be competitive when we begin conference play next month we need to show more maturity. We're not a finished product but this is a step in the right direction."
UTEP took the doubles point, winning the number one and three pro sets. Dubyanskaya and Tatyana Postnikova defeated Abdrakhmanova and Ximena Fuentes 8-3 at number two.
Sam Houston's next action is an exhibition with Lee Junior College Friday, Feb. 18, at the McAdams Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
