Senior 6-7 Gilberto Clavell continues to climb in Sam Houston's all-time career scoring ranks.
Now the forward from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, is just eight point away from climbing into the all-time top 20 scorers for Bearkat men's basketball.
On Feb. 9, Clavell sank a pair of free throws with less than a minute left at UT-Arlingtonto become the first junior college transfer to score more than 1,000 career points during his two years as a Bearkat at the NCAA Division I level.
After leading the Bearkats to a road victory last Saturday at Central Arkansas, Clavell now has scored 1,048 points in 58 games since transferring to Sam Houston from Collin County Community College. Only 21 other men have scored 1,000 career points at Sam Houston State.
Averaging 21.1 points in Southland play and 19.9 for the season, Clavell is the Southland's second-leading scorer. He has totaled double figures in 24 of the Kats' 25 contests this year (including 11 games with 20 or more points).
Clavell is averaging 18.2 points per game as a starter for the Kats, totaling double figures in 51 of his 58 appearances. He has earned Southland "Player of the Week" honors twice this year and five times as a Bearkat.
Three times in two years, Clavell has scored 30 or more points in one game.
Donald Cole, the Southland "Player of the Year" in 2003, totaled 984 points in his two years as a Bearkat. Corey Allmond, the three-point shooting wonder from last year's championship team, totaled 979 career points.
With eight points in Wednesday's home game with Northwestern State, Clavell will pass Al Adams to move into the Bearkat all-time top 20 scorers list. Adams totaled 1,055 points in 99 games between 1953 and 1956.
