Southland Conference Live Indoor Results
With the men ranked among the top eight in 11 events and the women in 12, both the Sam Houston men's and women's squads should be in the thick of the competition at the 32nd annual Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday.
For the second year in a row, the event will be held at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.
UTSA is the five-time defending champion in men's indoor track and field while Stephen F. Austin has taken home the women's trophy the past two years.
Sam Houston won the women's championship in 2007 and 2008. The Bearkat men's highest finish indoors was as runners-up in 2006.
"The team has been training hard and we've posted some outstanding marks during the indoor season," head coach David Self said. "If we can stay focused on what we need to do, we can be successful."
The 2011 squad features many newcomers and Self will be looking to his veterans to provide leadership. One of those veterans is senior Jessica Fisher, who has earned All-Southland Conference honors eight times indoors. Fisher has a best time of 25.41 in the 200 meters which currently ranks seventh in the Southland.
Three Bearkat women rank among the top eight in the 400 meters with freshman Lygia Foreman owning the second fastest time in the league this year with a 56.97 clocking.
Sophomore Sabrina Starr stands second in the 60 meter hurdles thus far in the league with a 8.63 time. Junior Sara Collazos ranks third in the 5,000 meters with a mark of 19:12.05.
Junior Ambra McCuin, who placed third in both the triple and long jumps last year, has the Southland's fifth best long jump this year with a mark of 18 feet, nine inches. Jenny Zoch and Christina Webb rank third and fourth in the shot put and weight throw, respectively.
On the men's side, D. J. Hayes owns the league's fastest indoor 400 meter dash this year with a time of 47.47. Scottie Jones, runner-up in last year's Southland 60 meter hurdles, has a best time of 8.01 seconds this year.
The Bearkat men look to be in the hunt for gold in the 4x400 meter relay. A. J. Edwards ranks second in the league in both the long jump and the triple jump. Chris Cralle has the league's secondbest weight throw. In the heptathlon, Matthew Johnson appears ready to contend.
