Two one-run losses end Waco tournament

Sam Houston concluded action in the Baylor University Softball Classic Sunday afternoon with a pair of one-run losses to Louisiana-Monroe and Central Arkansas.

ULM had to go to extra innings and the international tiebreaker to defeat the Kats 5-4 in Sunday's first game. Central Arkansas handed SHSU a 2-1 loss in the nightcap. The Bearkats drop to 7-13 for the season.

In the first game, Sam Houston jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning as designated player Ashley Isbell hit a two-run double then scored on a double by right fielder Alex Survant.

After ULM took a 4-3 lead, third baseman Shelbi Tucker tied the contest with a run-scoring single in the third innings.

The score remained tied 4-4 until the first extra inning when tournament rules required using the tiebreaker to start the inning with a runner on second base. Sam Houston could not score by Sarah Ayala singled for the winning run for ULM.

Tomi Garrison was the losing pitcher for Sam Houston, striking out eight batters in seven and one third innings.

Alyssa Coggins' solo home run in the first inning accounted for the Kats' only score in the UCA loss. The Bears scored runs in the first and fifth innings.

Cecilia Castillo was the losing pitcher for the Kats.

Sam Houston will open Southland Conference action Tuesday and Wednesday with a three-game series at Stephen F. Austin.

Next home games for the Kats will be a three-game weekend league series with Teas State on Saturday and Sunday, March 12-13.
