Cougars drop Kats 9-3

Houston - The University of Houston totaled nine runs on 11 hits and four Bearkat errors to hand Sam Houston a 9-3 non-conference loss Tuesday night.

Cougar shortstop Chase Jensen and infielder David Murphy both went 3-for-4 to lead UH at the plate. Houston upped its season record to 8-9, ending a three-game losing streak while handing the Kats their third consecutive defeat.

Jensen scored Houston's opening run with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Second baseman Ryan Still's sacrifice fly and catcher John Cannon scored on an error to put Houston up 3-0 after four innings.

Second baseman Braeden Riley's RBI double put the first run on the board for the Bearkats in the sixth inning. Designated hitter Chris Andreas doubled and later scored on an error in the eighth and shortstop Ryan Mooney added another tally in the top of the ninth with an RBI single.

Houston broke the contest open with two runs in the seventh inning and four more in the bottom of the eighth.

Freshman Cody Dickson (3-1) was the starter for Sam Houston and took the loss, giving up four hits and three runs (two unearned) in three and two-thirds innings.

Michael Oros, Matt Walker, Michael Hilliard, Michael Burchett and Jordan Westra all threw in relief.

Sam Houston totaled 10 hits with Mooney and third baseman Kevin Miller each posted two hits apiece.

The Bearkats return to Southland Conference action with a three game weekend series at San Marcos against Texas State beginning Friday night.
