UTSA totaled 21 hits in 12 innings Saturday as the Roadrunners swept a Southland Conference softball doubleheader with Sam Houston, winning 4-3 and 11-3.
A walk-off two-run single by designated hitter Danye Holmes allowed UTSA to rally from a 3-1 deficit to pick up a 4-3 victory in the opening game.
Both runs were unearned as Jori Fox started the three-run seventh inning reaching first on an infield error. The second out of the inning scored Fox. Ashley Kappler, who singled and Molly Fichtner, who walked, scored the winning runs after Holmes' game-ending single.
Sam Houston jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Haley Wiginton singled and Alex Survant blasted a home run to right field in the third inning. Carrie Monroe cut the margin to 2-1 with a solo homer in the UTSA half of the third.
The Bearkats added a third run in the sixth inning as Tayler Gray singled, reached third base on an error then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Shelbi Tucker.
Tomi Garrison (8-10) took the loss after a strong effort in the circle which saw the junior spread eight hits over six and two-thirds innings. Garrison struck out six Roadrunner batters.
Molly Fitchner and Danye Holmes both posted home runs as UTSA racked up 13 hits to run-rule SHSU 11-3 in the nightcap.
Cecilia Castillo brought in Sam Houston's first run with a single and Tori Benavidez scored two with a double in a three-run second inning for the Bearkats. UTSA opened with two runs in the first inning, added three more in the second, four in the fourth and two in the fifth inning.
Shelby Lancaster was the losing pitcher for Sam Houston, throwing three and two-thirds innings. Courtney Schoemann completed the game.
The pair will play the third game in the series Sunday afternoon.
UTSA stands 11-14 for the season and 7-4 in Southland Conference action. Sam Houston fell to 11-20 for the year and 3-7 in league play.
