Softball wins 6-5 in slugfest

Alex Survant and Shelbi Tucker hit first-inning home runs to power Sam Houston to a 6-5 Southland Conference softball victory over UTSA Sunday afternoon.

The win ended a five-game losing streak for the Bearkats, upping SHSU's record for the season to 12-20 and 4-7 in league action.

Although out-hit by the Roadrunners 10-8, Sam Houston took advantage of two UTSA errors jump out to a 6-3 lead after the first three innings.

Hailey Wiginton and Cecilio Castillo, who led Sam Houston with identical 2-for-4 days at the plate, both had hands in scoring two unearned runs in the second inning. Tayler Gray doubled and later scored on a ground ball by Sarah Allison for what proved to be the winning run in the third inning.

Molly Fichtner and Kristi Kapple each hit solo home runs in the sixth inning to cut SHSU's margin to a run. But Tami Garrison and the Bearkat defense shut out the Roadrunners in the seventh to hold on to the victory.

Garrison upped her record in the circle to 9-10, spreading 10 hits over seven innings while striking out six Roadrunners.

The Sam Houston softball team travels to College Station for a Wednesday night game with Texas A&M. The Bearkats will host Northwestern State in a Southland Conference three-game series Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27, at Bearkat Softball Complex. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. A Sunday single contest starts at 1 p.m.
