Walk-off homer earns Kats 5-4 win

Huntsville - Sam Houston rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth and catched Doug Oney smashed a walk-off home run over the left field fence to give the Bearkats a 5-4 victory over Houston Baptist in 10 innings Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium.

The victory ended a six-game losing streak for the Bearkats, upping SHSU's season record to 13-8. HBU dropped to 1-17 for the year.

A two-out single by first baseman Daniel Nottebart brought in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning for Sam Houston.

The Bearkats totaled 14 hits with Nottebart, Mark Hudson, Chris Andreas and Ryan Mooney all picking up two hits apiece.

Center fielder Jacob Gonzalez and right fielder Kolby Arnst posted run-scoring singles in the third inning and designated hitter Robbie Buller led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to give Houston Baptist a 3-0 lead after five innings.

Buller led the Huskies at the plate, going 3-for-5. Second baseman David Pfunter and shortstop Collin Hetzler totaled two hits apiece.

Second baseman Ryan Mooney's one out double started a sixth inning rally for SHSU.

After designated hitter Chris Andreas walked, first baseman Daniel Nottebart doubled down the right field line to score Mooney. A bases loaded single by shortstop Braeden Riley scored Andreas to cut the Huskie margin to 3-2.

Left fielder Luke Clements bases loaded walk extended HBU's lead to 4-2.

Right fielder Greg Olson singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Mooney moved Olson to third with a single and Olson scored on a fielder's choice by Andreas. A two-out single by Nottebart tied the contest 4-4 with two outs.

Houston Baptist totaled 10 hits and played errorless ball with several outstanding catches in the outfield to end potential Bearkat scoring opportunities.

Cody Dickson was the Bearkats' starter. Matt Walker, Michael Oros, Jordan Westra and Michael Burchett pitched in relief.

Sam Houston will play host to Prairie View A&M in another midweek game Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.

The Bearkats return to Southland Conference action this weekend when Sam Houston meets UTSA in an important league series. Game times at Sanders Stadium are 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
