Sam Houston (12-12, 4-7) ranks eighth in the current Southland standings. One of the bubble teams, Northwestern State (18-12, 4-5), visits the Bearkat Softball Complex for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. The Demons are tied with Central Arkansas for sixth place.
The Kats have found success against Northwestern State in recent years, winning six of their last nine games against the Demons.
But Sam Houston has not fared well on their home diamond this year, going 3-6 in encounters at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
The Bearkats rank fourth in the Southland with a team batting average of .276. Sam Houston shortstop Hailey Wiginton ranks third in the league in total hits (37) and leads the Southland in runs scored (29) and total bases (64) and ranks second in home runs (7).
Kim Damian stands third in the conference with a .410 batting average. Wiginton is hitting .352.
Northwestern State comes into the series with the Southland's top pitching record. The Demons own a 2.20 team earned run average with 220 strike outs in 30 games. Brooke Boening ranks second individually in the Southland with a 1.71 ERA while her teammate Kylie Roos boasts a 2.26 mark.
Sam Houston and Northwestern State begin the three-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. The third game will start 1 at p.m. on Sunday.
