Huntsville - Sam Houston and Northwestern State split a Southland Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon, each team earning a 4-0 shutout.
Sam Houston won the first game 4-0. The Demons took the nightcap 4-0.
In the opener, pitcher Tomi Garrison posted her second shutout of the season, striking out three Demons while facing only 24 batters in seven innings.
Kylie Roos allowed SHSU only five hits in the nightcap, striking out four for first shutout of the year. Garrison also started the second game for Sam Houston, giving up eight hits and four runs. Only one of the four was earned.
"We came into the weekend looking to have Tomi pitch both games today," SHSU head coach Bob Brock said. "Tomi pitched well enough to win both games but we didn't get the runs in the second game."
Sam Houston got off to a quick start in the opener as shortstop Hailey Wiginton led off with a double to center field then scored on a single by designated player Alex Survant. Third baseman Shelbi Tucker brought in Survant with a single for a 2-0 lead after a half inning of play.
The Bearkats tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. Second baseman Alyssa Coggins started things with a two-out single. Wigington singled again and the two scored on consecutive RBI singles by left fielder Tori Benavidez and Survant, respectively.
Northwestern State scored its first run of the day in the third inning of the second game on an RBI single by pitcher Kylie Roos. Center fielder Ashlee England put a solo home run over the left field fence in the third inning.
Centerfielder Ashlee England hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and the Demons picked up a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.
Sam Houston and Northwestern State will meet in the third and final game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
