Softball splits at Nicholls

The two teams were rained out Saturday when the scheduled three-game series was to start. The third game will not be made up.
Nicholls won the first game 7-4 Sunday morning. Then Sam Houston came back to win the second 5-3 on Wiginton's heroics.
With the Bearkats trailing 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning, right fielder Erin Burford led off reaching on an error by the shortstop. Calli Wood was safe on a fielder's choice and Tomi Garrison singled. Wiginton lifted a shot over the right field fence for the game-winner. An RBI double by Alex Survant added an insurance run.
Garrison evened her season record in the pitching circle at 7-7 with the win, facing 30 Colonel batters while giving up only seven hits.
In the first game, Nicholls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Third baseman Shelbi Tucker hit a solo shot in the fourth to cut the margin to one run.
But the Colonels tallied two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Run-scoring hits by Wiginton and Calli Wood started a three-run rally in the top of the seventh but Nicholls hung on for the victory.
The Bearkats now stand 10-15 for the season and 3-2 in Southland Conference action.
