Junior righthander Tomi Garrison held the Southland Conference's team batting leaders to only two hits Saturday afternoon as Sam Houston shut out Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Garrison came back to pitch the final two-and-two-thirds innings of the second game for a save as Sam Houston earned its second Southland doubleheader sweep of the year with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.
Sam Houston (17-25, 9-10) and A&M-Corpus Christi (33-13, 17-6) will meet in the third and final contest of the series Sunday at 12 noon.
The Islanders, who entered the game in first place in the Southland standings, were limited to a third inning single to left field and a bunt single in the sixth inning. Garrison (13-13), who tossed the 20th no-hitter in SHSU school history one week ago at McNeese, struck out six Islander batters. She picked up four outs on fly balls and nine on grounders.
Left fielder Alex Survant provided the game-winning hit with a double to the right field wall in the third inning. The hit scored second baseman Alyssa Coggins who singled and reached second on a bunt single by shortstop Hailey Wiginton.
Losing pitcher Greta Cecchetti (7-4) limited the Bearkats to four hits.
"Tomi has been throwing really well," SHSU head coach Bob Brock said. "She had the no-hitter last week, then threw well against the Aggies Wednesday. The doubleheader sweep was a team effort. We're playing well right.
Center fielder Tori Benavidez opened the first inning of the second game with her first home run of the season, sending the ball over the center field fence.
First baseman Kim Damian and third baseman Shelbi Tucker started the fourth inning with a single and an RBI double, respectively. Right fielder Erin Burford doubled to score Tucker and put the Kats up 3-0.
The Bearkats appeared to have scored a fourth run with Burford reached home plate on a single by Wiginton before Coggins was thrown out at third base but the umpire ruled the run did not score in time.
Left fielder Erin Burford brought in two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with her first home run of the season.
Freshman Shelby Lancaster (1-2) earned the victory as the starter for Sam Houston in the second game.
