Islander bats explode

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's bats came alive Sunday afternoon as the Islanders totaled 10 hits in five innings to run-rule Sam Houston State 9-0 in the third and final game of a Southland Conference softball series at Bearkat Softball Complex.

A&M-Corpus Christi (34-13, 18-6) came into Saturday's double-header in first place in the league standings and ranked as the Southland's top hitting softball team.

But junior right-hander Tomi Garrison limited TAMUCC to just two hits in a 1-0 Sam Houston victory and later came on to get the save in a 5-2 Kat win Saturday afternoon to clinch a series victory and move SHSU into sixth place in the Southland standings.

The story was different Sunday as the Islanders jumped out to a quick lead on a three-run double by shortstop Lauren Dodson and never looked back.

Third baseman Kacie Smith added a three-run homer in a six-run third inning. Islander pitcher Jordan Trujillo (13-5) limited the Bearkats to three hits to post her sixth shutout of the season. The game also represented the sixth time Sam Houston has been blanked this year. Second baseman Caley Jeter went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Garrison (12-13) gave up six runs on seven hits for the loss. Cecilia Castillo and Courtney Schoenemann also pitched in relief.

Garrison produced first hit for Sam Houston (17-26, 9-11) with a single in the third inning. Center fielder Tori Benavidez and first baseman Kim Damian posted the other two hits in the fourth inning.

Sam Houston next heads to UT-Arlington for a three-game road  series beginning Saturday. The Bearkats return to Huntsville for face a series with Southeastern Louisiana on April 30 and May 1.
